What the experience is like
The buggy is hands-on. You either drive (self-drive) or ride shotgun while a guide drives (guided), but either way you are in a chassis purpose-built for the dunes - roll cage, harness, four wheels under you, the engine note in your ears. Slot lengths run 30 minutes to 2 hours; the focus is the ride itself, not the camp.
The safari is sit-back. A professional driver handles a Land Cruiser through the dune-bashing leg; you are a passenger in the cabin. After the dune bash the convoy reaches a permanent camp where activities (camel ride, sandboarding, henna) and a BBQ buffet take over. Slot length is 4-6 hours total because of the camp arc.
Most first-time visitors do both - safari first (the 'introduction to the desert') and buggy on a return visit (the 'I want to drive') - or pair them in a combo day. Same dune corridor, very different experiences.

If you want one decisive choice and you are in Dubai for the first time, take the safari evening - it covers the dune bashing, the camel, the sandboard, the BBQ and the shows in one slot. If you are returning or want a more active experience, take the buggy - the chassis and the dune feel are more direct. Combo day pairs both with one transfer.
