Hot air ballooning over the Dubai desert begins in the dark. Pickup arrives at your hotel between 03:30 and 04:30 depending on the season - early because the operator needs you at the launch site forty minutes before sunrise, when the air is at its most stable and the burner-up sequence can begin. The drive into the desert is quiet; most guests doze, the city lights fade, and you arrive at a flat patch of corridor sand where the balloon envelope is already laid out.
Inflation is a slow ceremony with a powerful payoff. The crew runs cold-air fans into the envelope while it inflates on the ground, then the pilot fires the burner to lift it upright. The flame is louder than guests expect; the heat above the basket is felt on the back of the neck. By the time the envelope stands clear of the ground, the eastern sky has begun to soften from black to deep blue. You step into the basket through a low side panel and find your compartment - the brief covers landing posture only takes two minutes because the rest of the flight is gentle.
Lift-off is so smooth that most guests miss the moment it happens - the ground simply isn't there anymore. For the next sixty minutes the pilot drifts the envelope at altitudes from 100 metres to 1200 metres, choosing the layer with the steadiest air. Dubai's hot air balloon flights launch from a few corridor sites in the desert margin between Dubai and the inner Empty Quarter foothills, all within an hour of central Dubai by pre-dawn road. The exact launch site is chosen each morning by the pilot in line with wind direction - balloons cannot steer laterally, only up and down, so the launch site is selected to put the prevailing wind under the envelope toward the chase-vehicle recovery zone. That is why the pickup window is narrow but the landing field is variable; the chase vehicle handles the flexible part. That partnership matters because UAE GCAA balloon licensing is rigorously inspected and the small number of certified operators in the country means quality control is built into the licence rather than into a marketing brochure. We confirm seat allocation directly with the operator's morning manifest, share weather-cancel decisions verbatim, and refund or reschedule on the operator's call rather than holding deposits in dispute. The post-flight camel ride and breakfast are run at the operator's camp; allergens and accessibility flagged at booking are passed forward.

Cooler than ground level - typically 8-12 degrees C inside the basket at flight altitude in winter, 18-22 in summer. The burner above the basket provides some radiant heat. No - balloon baskets are designed for standing. The basket is divided into compartments with padded edges; everyone faces outward. There is no seating because the landing posture (knees bent, holding the rope handles, facing forward) is safer than seated. Guests with standing concerns should flag this on WhatsApp before booking.
Trained falconers handle the bird; you receive a glove, the falcon perches on your hand, and you get a short photo opportunity.
