Quick answer. A camel ride in Dubai is a short walk on a saddled camel led by a handler, available either in the desert dunes near Al Qudra or on the city beach (JBR). It pairs naturally with a desert safari evening or a sunset photo slot.

What the experience is actually like

A camel ride in the Dubai desert is a slower experience by design. The handler walks the camel up to where you are standing, asks the animal to kneel, and helps you settle into the saddle - that is the most active moment of the ride. The camel rises in two phases (rear legs first, then front), which feels lurchier than expected but the handler holds the lead rope steady and most guests adjust within a couple of seconds. From there the camel walks at a leisurely pace through the dune line, the handler beside or in front, and the only sound is hoof on sand.

The view from the saddle is part of why the ride is worth the slot. You sit roughly 2.5 metres above ground level, which changes how the dunes look - the lines flatten into long ridges, the colours soften with distance, and the camp or staging area drops below the horizon faster than you expect. Most guests want a couple of photo stops; the handler holds the camel for that, and the silence makes the shots easy. Phones do fine; full cameras are easier on a neck strap because both hands ideally hold the saddle horn for balance.

Dismount is the reverse of mount - the camel kneels in two phases, you swing your leg over and step down, and the handler steadies the saddle. The whole ride lasts 15 to 30 minutes for the standard slot, longer for the extended option or as part of the safari camp arc. Most guests describe it as a calm bookend to a livelier desert day - a moment of slow time on an animal that has worked these dunes long before any of us arrived.

If this, then that

  • You want the camel ride but not the safari arc
Standalone desert camel slot - we transfer you out and back without the camp activities. Quieter, more focused on the animal.
  • You have only an hour between hotel and dinner
JBR beach camel ride. No desert transfer, short slot, photo stops included.
  • You are nervous around large animals
Photo session at the camp instead of a full ride. The handler brings the camel to you; you stay on the ground.

Local context & geography

We run camel experiences in two settings - the desert camp on the Al Qudra dune corridor margin (the same area our safari and balloon slots use) and the city-side beach concession at JBR. The desert camels work as part of a small partner herd that handles the safari camp route in the late afternoon and the standalone slot earlier in the day. They live at the camp's permanent infrastructure rather than being trucked in per slot, which matters for welfare - the rest periods between rides happen on home ground, with shade, water and the same handler relationships day to day. The JBR option uses a smaller permitted city herd at the beach.

Pickup & meeting points

Desert slots include hotel pickup from most central Dubai zones in our 4x4 - Marina, JBR, Downtown, Business Bay, Palm Jumeirah, Bur Dubai, Deira and Al Barsha. The JBR beach slot is meet-on-site at the agreed JBR Walk point - no pickup needed. Pickup window is confirmed on WhatsApp once the slot is locked. See our Dubai pickup zones for the full hotel cluster map.

How we run it

Camel welfare is the part of this experience that matters most to us. We work only with handlers who run published rest cycles, fresh water access between rides, declared weight limits and a midday pause in summer. We do not run a camel race, do not allow guest-led riding without a handler, and do not run summer afternoon slots when ground temperature on the sand is genuinely dangerous. Where a guest's brief does not fit the welfare envelope (a rider clearly over the weight limit, a child too young to be safely seated) we say so on WhatsApp at booking rather than fitting the slot regardless.

Pricing guidance

Pricing guidance. Camel ride slots start from AED 150 per person and vary by location (desert vs JBR), duration and any combo pairing. Sunset and decoration upgrades carry a small extra charge. We confirm the exact figure on WhatsApp before any deposit. No fake discounts; no unverified animal-welfare claims. Compare every published rate on the pricing & deals hub.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking a desert camel ride and expecting a long horseback-style trek - it is a short, slow walk by design.
  • Bringing very young infants without warning - some operators decline for safety.
  • Wearing very short shorts on the saddle - chafing is real.
  • Rushing the photo stop - handlers will pause for the shot if you ask politely.
  • Booking summer midday - animal welfare pauses midday rides; book morning or late evening.

Common questions

Booking, fitness, kids and what to bring.

How long is the actual ride?

Typical duration is around 15-30 minutes. Extended rides are available as an add-on, and the safari combo includes a longer leg.

Is the camel ride safe for kids?

Yes for most ages. The camel kneels for mounting, the handler walks alongside, and children can sit in front of an adult on the saddle. Tell us the kids' ages on WhatsApp.

Are the animals treated well?

We work with handlers who follow standard welfare practice - rest periods between rides, fresh water for the camels, weight limits respected, midday pauses in summer. We do not promise certifications we cannot verify.

Can I ride the camel myself without a handler?

No - all rides are handler-led for safety and animal welfare. The handler walks alongside throughout.

Is the JBR beach ride better than the desert ride?

Different experiences. JBR is a quick city-side stop with no transfer; desert is a slower-paced ride in the actual dunes with photo opportunities. Combine with a safari for the full set.

What is the weight limit for a camel ride?

Around 100 kg per rider for most camels in our partner herds, slightly higher for the larger working camels at the desert camp. Tell us at booking if any rider is close to or above that limit and we will route to a camel that fits the weight.

Is the camel ride suitable for elderly guests?

Generally yes - the handler walks the camel at a slow pace, the saddle is supportive, and the ride is short (15-30 minutes). Guests with hip, knee or back conditions should mount and dismount slowly with handler help; the kneel-down for mounting is the most physically active moment of the ride. Tell us at booking and we will plan around the brief.

Can I take photos with the camel without booking a ride?

Yes at the desert camp during the safari arc - the photo-with-camel station is part of the camp activity set. Standalone photo-only sessions in the desert are by quote; the JBR option works well for a quick photo stop without a full ride booking.

Are the camels at the JBR beach the same as the desert ones?

No - the JBR camels are city-permit handler animals on a shorter rotation, owned by the beach concession partner. The desert camels work the camp routes and the standalone desert ride. Both are managed under the same welfare practice; the experiences differ because the setting differs.
